Termites are very common household pests. These insects can be very destructive to one’s home and wood-based items. There are several types of termites found in the United States. Termite identification can make it easier to deal with the problem as different types of termites require different methods of extermination.

Termite control

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites are the most common kind of termite and unfortunately tend to do the most damage. These insects form colonies underground and will create mud tunnels to the wood source. These tunnels are a good way to identify these termites. These insects are often exterminated using baits or pesticide liquids. It is best to hire a professional as this will ensure that the items are used correctly. These termites are about one quarter inch in length and light colored. The soldiers have long heads and mandibles.

Drywood Termite

Drywood termites tend to live in wood that has little moisture and do not create burrows in the ground. These insects burrow into the wood and seal it behind them with a mud-like substance. They are most commonly found in attics. The easiest way to identify these termites is by their waste piles. They will form their waste into pellets and push it out of their nest. Often piles can be found near infested wood. These termites are also relatively large and are about half an inch in length. Baits are useless with these termites. Exterminators will either spot treat the wood with pesticides or fumigate.

Termite Treatment

Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are not native to the United States but are from Asia. These insects are subterranean and can form much larger colonies than other termites. These colonies can affect multiple homes in a neighborhood. Formosan termites are usually found in the southern states because they cannot reproduce in cool temperatures. These termites are very similar to the native termites, but it is important to call a pest control service immediately. The large size of Formosan termite colonies can make them difficult to control.

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood Termite

Dampwood Termites do not nest in the soil, but instead they choose damp or decaying wood. These insects can reach an inch in length and are only found on the Pacific coast. They tend to have a relatively large head. Wood that has been damaged by dampwood termites usually looks smooth and clean inside. One can help prevent these termites by plumbing problems and leaks under control, so an acceptable home is not created for these insects.

Termites are destructive insects. When trying to get rid of any kind of termite, it is more efficient to hire an experienced exterminator. This can save time and ensure that the job is done properly.
